GTA 6 storage space: how much you need, and the best PS5 SSDs and Xbox expansion cards

GTA 6’s download is up to 212 GB, and pre-loading starts on 10 November. If you have a few other games installed, there’s a good chance your console is already too full. Here’s how to check, and what to buy if you need more space.

How much free space does your console really have?

Consoles lose a big chunk of their advertised storage to the system software. Roughly:

Series S owners, GTA 6 alone fills most of your console. Expect to need an expansion card or to uninstall almost everything else.

Check your real free space in Settings → Storage (PS5) or Settings → System → Storage devices (Xbox).

Option 1: free up space (costs nothing)

• Delete games you’ve finished. Your saves stay in the cloud (PS Plus / Xbox) or on the console.
• PS5: you can move PS4 games and store PS5 games on a USB drive, but PS5 games must be copied back to play them.
• Xbox: Series X|S games can be stored on a USB drive but only played from the internal SSD or an expansion card.

Option 2 for PS5: add an M.2 SSD

Every PS5 has a spare slot for an extra SSD. Sony’s official requirements:

• PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe (SATA M.2 drives don’t work)
• 250 GB to 8 TB
• 5,500 MB/s read speed or faster recommended
• A heatsink is required. Buy a drive with one built in, or add one (it must fit within 11.25 mm total height)

Get 2 TB if you can. It often works out the best value per gigabyte and holds GTA 6 several times over. Fitting it takes about 10 minutes with a small Phillips screwdriver.

Option 2 for Xbox: add a storage expansion card

Xbox Series X|S games can only be played from the internal drive or an official Storage Expansion Card, which plugs into the back of the console. No tools are needed.
